World Mental Health Day 2020

Saturday 10th October 2020

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year and this year's theme, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is 'mental health for all'.

We all have mental health, and it's just as important as our physical health.

As found by the APMS (2014), 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem. Mental health problems range from the worries we all experience as part of everyday life, to serious long-term conditions. Anxiety and depression are the most common problems, with around 1 in 10 people affected at any one time.

This year more than ever it is important to check in on people to see if they are ok. Many people have been quite isolated due to the coronovirus pandemic and lockdown. Bare in mind your friends, family and colleagues. Often it is those who you think are the strongest who may be struggling the most. That simple check in or catchup could really make a world of difference.

If you cannot visit people in person, why not organise a virtual hang out? You could have a coffee and a chat, stream a movie together at the same time - there are lots of ways to stay connected!

If you are struggling with your mental health, or worried about someone you know - help is available. You're not alone; talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to recovery.

There are some great resources around looking after your health on the Mental Health Foundation website. You can also contact the Samaritans, who offer emotional support 24 hours a day in full confidence, free on 116 123.
