Making sustainability and innovation the heart of what we do

As part of the Genuit Group, Polypipe Building Products has a role to play in not only making the built environment more sustainable, but by becoming a more sustainable, low-carbon business ourselves, as well as delivering sustainable solutions at scale.

As part of this year’s Global Recycling Day, we have teamed up with business units across the Group to showcase our Wash & Squash initiative.

Wash & Squash

The Wash & Squash scheme, as introduced by Polypipe Civils and Green Urbanisation, encourages everyone to bring their end-of-use HDPE bottles such as milk bottles, bleach bottles, and bottles with the number ‘2’ recycling symbol to Wash & Squash bins located around our sites.

The bottles are collected and taken to the Civils’ Horncastle site where they will be recycled at their Polymer Processing Plant and manufactured into engineered products.

Granulation Department

In preparation for the Polypipe Building Products’ segment of the Global Recycling Day video, the Granulation Department opened their doors to tell us a little more about what happens in their area of Broomhouse Lane.

Our Granulation Department sees up to 60 tonnes of PVC a week pass through. The unusable piping is then granulated down into plastic pellets, which is then used in our waste pipe products.

This goes towards the Genuit Group target of 63% of tonnage from recycled materials. Not only does the use of in-house recycled materials help make our products more sustainable, but it also helps advance the circular economy of the business.

Broomhouse Lane gets the same flooring as Wembley Stadium

We've recently been installing some new flooring along our walkways at our Moulding Department at Broomhouse Lane.

Abacus Flooring Solutions, the company behind the innovative flooring, have designed a world first seamless resin flooring system that is made using 100% recycled white plastic otherwise destined for landfill.

The use of recycled white plastic in the flooring system has obvious environmental benefits, but it also provides a safer alternative to the flooring industry’s current standard. The industry used silica sand as a filler, however recent classification of silica sands and dust from concrete poses serious hazards to health.

By partnering with other companies who have the same environmental ethos as we have, we are ensuring that the messaging that we put out externally to our own customers is the same as what we consider when making purchases internally.
