Polypipe Provides Ventilation Solution For Scotlands First Affordable, Low Energy House

Polypipe Ventilation is delighted to have participated in the innovative South Lanarkshire College Aurora low-energy house project.

The first affordable low energy, low carbon house in Scotland, Aurora has been developed in partnership with Dawn Homes and other private companies. The brief was to meet level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes using established technologies. The timber-frame house is a showcase and training facility for the design and technologies required to meet future building standards and features affordable innovations such as triple-glazed krypton gas windows, rainwater harvesting and heating from solar panels and ground-source probes.

As part of this training facility, Polypipe Ventilation has not only supplied Domus EasiPipe 125 round ducting and Domus ThermaPipe insulated ducting for the unheated areas, but has also designed an innovative solution to allow both a NIBE Exhaust Air Heat Pump and a Ground Source Heat Pump to be used within the same ducting system. The solution incorporates four motorised dampers, two normally-open and two normally-closed, which allows the trainer to switch between the different heating systems to show how they work and differentiate their features and benefits. The result is a simple yet highly effective way to enable the college to get the best value, whilst removing the need to install a second ducting system.

The Domus duct system works particularly well with the NIBE equipment due to its excellent air flow performance and engineered connections which minimise leakage rates and help units to work at optimum performance and energy efficiency.

Neil Tilsley, Managing Director of Polypipe Ventilation, is pleased to be associated with such an innovative project: 'With South Lanarkshire College being the largest trainer of operatives in the construction industry in Scotland, we consider this to be a golden opportunity to promote efficient heat recovery to a wide market. Of course, a high quality ducting system which minimises air leakage is essential to the efficient operation of the heat exchange system. We have been working in partnership with NIBE for some time now providing the ducting for their systems and have seen a rapid increase in interest in the technology.'

The Domus brand from Polypipe Ventilation has been at the forefront of the ducting industry for almost 25 years and is well known for its quality and innovation. The range includes high efficiency rectangular and circular duct systems, insulation and attenuation solutions, fire stopping products and high quality extractor fans.
