Charities
The Regatta was set up by Steve to raise money for his autistic nephew William.
A fortunate aspect of the Regatta is that money is no longer raised for William as his condition has improved considerably. Instead, the regatta has been used as an occasion to raise money for other charities; the National Autistic Society for 1 year and Joshua for 3 years. Joshua is a Malawi based charity, helping the million or so children orphaned by the AIDS crisis. Money from the Polypipe Regatta enabled a new classroom and a science lab to be built.
This year the money raised will go to the British Heart Foundation and the John Merricks Sailing Trust. Steve is passionate about helping others and hopes that all entrants will support this year's fundraising efforts.
The British Heart Foundation
The British Heart Foundation is the nation's heart charity. Every day they save lives, through pioneering research, providing vital information to help people reduce their own heart health risks, campaigning for change and supporting and caring for heart patients.
John Merricks Sailing Trust
Without financial support from other people, 1996 Olympic 470 Silver Medalist, John Merricks would never have been able to fulfil his ambitions and demonstrate his remarkable talent for sailing. Set up by those closest to John following his untimely death, The John Merricks Sailing Trust seeks to help young sailors achieve their goals.
Since 1997 the John Merricks Sailing Trust, a registered charity, has supported youth sailing by awarding more than 100 grants. Totalling over £175,000 these awards have been made to deserving individuals, clubs and youth organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to sailing and financial need.
The John Merricks Sailing Trust is proud to be Supporting Youth Sailing in the United Kingdom.
